Weather, Water Cycles, and a Packed House at Scarselli Elementary
Hailey Sebahar

Scarselli 3rd graders recently hit the stage for their second play of the year—this one focused entirely on weather science. From types of clouds to the water cycle, students brought their learning to life through music, movement, and storytelling. View the photos on Facebook

Led by teachers Mrs. Sarah Ruiz and Mrs. Augusta Hinton, the performance was part of a yearlong effort to create cohesive, engaging units that connect reading, writing, science, and social studies. Ruiz shared, “When kids are singing about cumulus clouds or reading about storms, those connections stick. It’s the perfect hook for deeper learning.”

The play was a full production—with auditions, props, backdrops, and even a student running the sound system. “He told me he had stage fright,” Ruiz said, “so he ran the sound. And he did a great job.”

Students performed the play twice in one day—once as a dress rehearsal, and once for families in a packed cafeteria. Ruiz added, “They didn’t want to use scripts. They wanted to know it. They wanted to look polished and professional.”

Sarah also noted the lasting value of these kinds of experiences:
“These are the events kids are going to remember about school. It gives parents a window into what their kids are learning—and gives students a chance to shine in ways that go beyond academics.”
