PWL Students Witness State Government in Action
Hailey Sebahar

On Monday, May 5, 24 National Junior Honor Society students from Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School had the opportunity to visit the 82nd Nevada State Legislature. As part of the trip, students toured the historic building, met with State Senator Robin Titus, and were formally introduced on the Assembly floor by Assemblyman Ken Gray.

For eighth graders Charlie G., Carter L., and Annie B., the experience offered more than just a break from the classroom. “We got to sit behind assembly members and watch them move through bills so quickly,” said Charlie. “They just said, ‘Approved—next!’ It was hard to keep up but really interesting to watch.” Carter added, “It was cool to see how Nevada addresses everything so fast.”

Annie was captivated by the building’s history—especially the portrait of Abraham Lincoln above the chambers. “It was shot three times in the 1950s, and a janitor patched the holes with leftover cleaning supplies. They didn’t even realize it until they moved the portrait years later,” she said.

Students also learned about the legislative process, including how bills move between the Assembly and Senate and into various committees. Their conversation with Senator Titus helped them understand the state’s current budget priorities, including how education funding is being maintained.

A big thank you to EPIC Coach Jennifer Worthington for making the trip possible and helping students see how what they’re learning in class connects to the real world.
