Exploration Mondays at JVES got an exciting upgrade as eight The Home Depot volunteers joined a mixed-age group of pre-K through 2nd graders to help build and paint snow globes. Students used real tools to create their projects, sparking creativity and practical skills.

This initiative, now in its second year, allows students to explore beyond the traditional curriculum by choosing topics they’re passionate about, like fashion, art, special effects, and engineering. In January, students will get to switch exploration topics, selecting what they want to learn next as they dive into new experiences.

JVES is nominated for an Innovation Award with Modern Teacher this February, thanks to the success of Explorations, spearheaded by Cris Jezek, Pam Hill-Gilmartin, and Veronica Griffith. Check out their award nomination video and hear firsthand from students about their experiences.
