Jacks Valley Elementary's "No-Sew Fashion" exploration class, led by teacher Dayna Haley, is combining creativity, sustainability, and education in the most stylish way. Watch the Video!
Students in this exploration class are learning the art of upcycled fashion, where they repurpose and transform gently used clothing into unique, wearable pieces—without sewing!
Their essential question, "Where do our clothes come from?" sparked discussions on fast fashion and its environmental impact. Students explored the life cycle of a T-shirt, created vision boards, and learned techniques like painting, cutting, and gluing to bring their designs to life. From flared jeans to custom tops, these young designers have shown incredible creativity and effort.
Last week, the class took their designs to the next level with a fashion show for the whole school. They walked the runway with confidence, showcasing their creative pieces. To top it off, they also hosted a pop-up fashion shop, where they sold their handmade creations to their peers, families and staff.
“This exploration has been so heartwarming and fulfilling, seeing students take an idea, get creative, and run with it. I just supply the materials, and they do the rest,” said Haley. “It’s amazing to combine my two passions—fashion and education.”
