Green Architecture Builds and Designs Greenhouse at PWL
Hailey Sebahar

As part of their Green Architecture class, a group of 7th and 8th grade students at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School spent the last few months of school designing and constructing a functioning greenhouse that will be ready for use when students return in the fall. View the photos on Facebook.

The project began with students creating digital models in SketchUp. "We all made different designs, and then we voted on our favorite," said Adrian R. "Mine was picked, but we had to adjust it a bit to fit the budget." The class then created physical scale models before jumping into the full build.

Materials were sourced with the help of their teacher, Mr. Cory Currence, using a mix of school funds and donations. "We looked at greenhouses online to figure out what materials to use. Then we checked places like Home Depot to see what fit the budget," explained Wyatt L. The class worked with a $3,000 limit and carefully planned every detail to stay within it.

Students split into teams to build each section: the front and back walls, side walls, and roof. “The roof was the hardest part,” said Alex P. “We had to make sure all the beams were lined up straight.” With Mr. Currence handling the ladder work and power tools, the students focused on measuring, assembling, and double-checking each piece as it came together.

They wrapped up the build just last week, painting the greenhouse and signing their names on a wooden plaque to mark their work. The space will be used by next year’s Green Architecture classes for planting and growing projects. “We’ll probably use a hose or try to set up irrigation,” said Wyatt. “That might be the next step.”

“It was cool to see something we designed actually get built,” added Adrian. “It’s been my favorite class this year.”
