DCSD Students Dig Into Learning Through Plants
Hailey Sebahar

Across Douglas County, students have been digging deep into hands-on learning—through gardening, hydroponics, and entrepreneurship. Read the Record Courier Article.

This month, the spotlight was on the third annual Northern Nevada Green Our Planet Giant Student Farmers Market, where DCSD students showed off their hard work, from growing plants to crafting and creating.

On May 15, students from Scarselli Elementary (SES), C.C. Meneley Elementary (CCMES), Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School (PWL), Minden Elementary (MES), Jacks Valley Elementary (JVES), and Piñon Hills Elementary (PHES) set up shop in Carson City alongside dozens of other schools from across the state. With booths filled with plants, crafts, produce, and student-made goods, DCSD students shared their work—and their learning—with the community.

Funds Generated at the Market

SES: $341

CCMES: $103

PWL: $457

MES: $421

PHES: $530

JVES: $667

Each school keeps 100% of what they earned, which goes back into supporting their garden or hydroponics program. Credit card proceeds will be added to these totals and distributed soon. The market was more than just a sales event—it was a celebration of creativity, sustainability, and real-world learning. Students applied financial literacy, science, business, and communication skills to turn their classroom projects into public-facing micro-businesses.
