ZCES Maker Space Transforms Learning with Hands-On Fun
G. Pedro “Cubby” Kinner has been a beloved figure at Zephyr Cove Elementary School for nearly 30 years, starting as a parent volunteer and now evolving into the heart of the school’s Maker Space. Read the Record Courier Article

Over the last five years, this creative classroom has become a dynamic space where students dive into activities like weaving, jewelry making, patining and 3D printing.

Each morning, Cubby greets students as the school’s mascot, setting a welcoming tone for the day. Inside his classroom, students’ imaginations come to life—whether they're 3D-printing dragons, creating jewelry, or turning old CDs into art. Cubby, a master weaver, teaches students how to make blankets and encourages them to reuse materials, often sourcing unique supplies like concrete slabs and construction paper on his own.

In a space where anything can be reused and reimagined, Cubby is constantly teaching his students the value of sustainability. His personal philosophy, “everything is reusable,” has resonated with the kids, who now view everyday materials with new eyes and understand that creativity isn’t limited by what you have—it’s driven by what you can imagine.

Cubby’s Maker Space is a popular destination, with students earning special passes to visit during lunch or recess. Classess also get weekly sessions in this ever-evolving space. Through his dedication, Cubby has made the Maker Space a vital part of ZCES, where students combine creativity and learning in exciting new ways.
