CCMES Mountain Lions Reach New Heights in Egg Drop Event!
Hailey Sebahar

The 5th graders at CCMES recently participated in their highly anticipated annual Egg Drop Challenge, testing their engineering skills and creativity. View more photos on Facebook.

As part of the project, each team was given a list of materials with specific quantities and limits, encouraging them to make careful decisions about what to use in their designs. They had to balance the selection of materials like tongue depressors, cotton balls, string, and water balloons, ensuring they stayed within their material limits while creating a protective structure for their egg. After developing and drawing their solutions, they built prototypes and prepared for two rounds of drops—first in the gym from 10 feet and then outside from even greater heights.

For the final challenge, with the help of Joe Benigno's Tree Service, which volunteered its crane, eggs were dropped from 15, 50, and an impressive 75 feet. Students were given the chance to refine their designs using additional materials like packing foam and shredded paper to strengthen their structures after the initial gym drops.

Four teams achieved a safe landing for their eggs! The following teams emerged victorious in the 75-foot drop:

  • Tanner, Henry, Jason
  • Charles, Ella, Demarion, Hope
  • Stephanee, Destiny, Amara, Aveanna
  • Ryan, Keegan, Kasey
