BREADCRUMB

Transportation

The Douglas County School District Transportation Department is committed to providing safe and efficient transportation for your children.

We have thirty six routes, sixty three employees and transport approximately three thousand two hundred students to and from school each day.

We provide transportation to District students in any grade level who live more than ONE MILE from their school of attendance. The shortest, safest, and most convenient walking path shall measure distance from school. Students with a disability related need specified in their IEP may be transported regardless of their distance from school.

School Bus Safety: Everyone Plays a Part

Every day, DCSD drivers, aides, and fleet maintenance staff work hard to keep our students safe. Families and motorists also play a big role in ensuring safe rides to and from school. Here are a few key reminders:

Students
At the Bus Stop:

  • Arrive at the stop early, staying a safe distance from the curb (at least three giant steps or 10 feet).
  • Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching it.
  • Make eye contact with the bus driver before crossing the street to ensure they see you.

While Boarding and Exiting:

  • Board one student at a time, using the handrail.
  • Never walk behind the bus; always cross in front of it.
  • If you drop something near the bus, do not pick it up; tell the driver instead.

On the Bus:

  • Stay seated with your back against the seat and head and arms inside the bus at all times.
  • Keep aisles clear of books, backpacks, and other items to prevent tripping.
  • Talk quietly and avoid loud noises that could distract the driver.
  • Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before standing up.

Motorists
When Approaching a School Bus:

  • Slow down when you see a school bus with yellow flashing lights; the bus is preparing to stop.
  • Stop completely when a school bus has its red lights flashing and its stop arm is extended.
  • Do not drive around or pass a stopped school bus with flashing red lights.
  • Be patient and attentive for children running to or from the bus.

Parents
Teach Your Child Bus Safety:

  • Review the rules with your child, especially about staying at least three steps away from the curb and never walking behind the bus.
  • Emphasize the importance of getting ready to exit before their stop and waiting for the bus to fully stop before disembarking.
  • Reinforce the rule to make eye contact with the driver and look both ways before crossing the street.

Be Visible and Attentive:

  • Stay with your child at the bus stop and ensure both you and your child are visible to traffic.
  • Consider supervising younger children at the bus stop to ensure their safety.

Thank you for helping us keep students safe every school day!
