Douglas County School District partners with homeschool families who would like their students to participate in district courses, programs, or activities. On this page you will find instructions for registration, links to curricular resources, and information about middle and high school athletics and activities.

How to Complete Homeschool Registration

Submit a Notice of Intent to Homeschool
Nevada law requires parents to file a Notice of Intent for each homeschooled child. This must be done within 10 days of withdrawing from public school or within 30 days of establishing residency in Nevada. The Notice only needs to be re-filed if the parent or child’s name or address changes.
Provide an Educational Plan
Each Notice must include an educational plan with goals in English language arts, math, science, and social studies (including history, geography, economics, and government). Parents determine the appropriate level of instruction based on the child’s age and skill level.
Explore Available Programs and Activities
Homeschooled students may participate in certain DCSD classes, programs, and extracurricular activities. Availability varies by school and program, and some offerings may include eligibility requirements.
Understand Participation in Exams
Some assessments may be available or required depending on the program. Families should review testing options and expectations to ensure proper planning.

Once the Notice of Intent and educational plan are received, the District will issue a written acknowledgment. This receipt serves as proof of compliance with Nevada’s compulsory attendance law and remains valid for 15 years.

Registration Resources

Notice of Intent to Homeschool

The parent of any child being homeschooled in the State of Nevada must file a Notice of Intent to Homeschool with the local School District. A separate Notice of Intent to Homeschool application must be filled out for each child. This must be done no later than 10 days after the child has been formally withdrawn from the public school system, or no later than 30 days after establishing residency in Nevada. The Notice of Intent does not need to be re-filed unless the name or address of the parent or child changes, in which case a new Notice of Intent must be filed by the parent within 30 days. By signing the Notice of Intent, the parent is acknowledging that they have control or charge of the child and the legal right to direct the education of the child.

Educational Plan

As the educator for your child, you must provide an educational plan with the Notice of Intent to Homeschool. The educational plan must include goals for your child in the subject areas of English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, including history, geography, economics and government as appropriate for the age and level of skill of the child as determined by the parent. Per NRS 388D.050 , the parent must be prepared to present the educational plan of instruction and proof of the identity of the child to a court of law, should it be requested by the court.

Receipt of Notice of Intent to Homeschool

Upon the School District's receipt of the Notice of Intent to Homeschool, including the educational plan, the District shall provide written acknowledgement to the parent. This acknowledgement shall be deemed proof of compliance with Nevada's compulsory school attendance law NRS 392.070. Receipts are valid for 15 years for each child for whom you submit an application.

Programs and Activities

Participation in Exams

The District allows homeschooled children to take college entrance exams, including the PSAT, SAT and ACT Exams. If you are interested in having your child participate in testing, please contact Douglas High School at (775) 782-5136 or George Whittell High School at (775) 588-2446 in August to have your child's name put on the list and for more detailed information regarding test registration. Homeschooled children are also eligible for the National Merit Scholarship and the Millennium Scholarship.

Curricular Resources for Homeschool Families

DCSD aligns instruction with Nevada Academic Content Standards. The resources below can help homeschool families plan instruction and understand what students are expected to learn at each grade level.

Note on Program Availability: Space varies each semester. Vacant seats for courses at schools (including Lake schools) are shared with families as available

Elementary (K–5)

Athletics for Homeschool Students

Home school students who meet eligibility requirements may participate in DCSD middle and high school athletics and activities. Tryout dates and seasons are listed below. Final team placement and participation are subject to school and league rules, space availability, and principal/athletic director approval.
